Upload

Upload files from your computer into Drive, and upload a new version in place of the old file.

This page helps you upload files from your computer into Drive, and upload a new version in place of the old file.

Upload files

  1. Open My drive, or the folder that will hold the files.
  2. Drag files from your computer onto the Drive page, or right-click an empty space, choose New item, then choose Upload files.
  3. Watch the progress in the panel at the bottom right.

Files you upload are yours, and get the same sharing as the folder they are in.

Follow the uploads

  • A cloud with a check mark means done.
  • A cloud with an exclamation mark means it failed. Click the retry button in that row.
  • Click x at the top of the panel to close it. If an upload is not finished, Drive asks first. Click Continue uploads or Cancel uploads.

Upload a new version

Use this when you want to change what is inside the file but keep its name, place and sharing.

  1. Right-click the file and choose Upload new version.
  2. Pick the new file from your computer.

The new file must be the same kind as the old one, for example a PDF in place of a PDF. You need the Writer access level or higher.

Other cases

  • If you upload into someone else's folder, you need the Writer access level or higher, and the owner of the folder also gets the Organizer access level on your file.
  • A data file, such as CSV or GeoJSON, can be imported as a table.
