Choose the data for a widget

Tell a widget which table to read and which fields to show.

This page helps you tell a widget which table to read and which fields to show. You do this in the Data section of the panel on the right.

Choose the data source

  1. Click the widget, then open the Data section in the panel on the right.
  2. Under Data source, press Select an item.
  3. Find the table in the My Drive or Shared with me tab, or type its name in the Search box.
  4. Click the table, then press OK.

A widget you add later uses the dashboard's first table by itself.

Choose the fields to show

The boxes in the Data section differ by widget type. A required box that is still empty is red.

WidgetBoxes to fill in

What each box does:

  • Group by: each value of this field becomes one bar, slice or point, for example region or province.
  • Split by: splits each group further by a second field. You can leave it empty, except for the heat map, which needs it.
  • Aggregate: what to work out in each group, such as Count, Sum or Average.
  • Field: the number field to work out. If you choose Count, you do not need one.

The text, image and section header widgets use no data.

Change the chart type

Under Chart type, press the icon of the new chart. The fields you chose are all kept.

You can only change within the same group. The first group is the charts that group data, such as the line chart, bar chart and pie chart. The second group is the key figure and the gauge.

Start from fields

If you do not know which chart to use, tick the fields you want to look at first, and App Studio picks a chart for you.

  1. Press the Fields tab on the left.
  2. If the dashboard has no data yet, press Select an item and choose a table.
  3. Tick the fields you want. Tick the main field first, because the order you tick them in matters.
  4. At the bottom it says what it Creates. Press that button to add it to the dashboard.

App Studio picks the chart from the fields you tick, like this:

You tickYou get
A geometry field, or latitude and longitudeMap
Two number fieldsScatter chart
One number fieldHistogram
A date, with at most one number fieldLine chart
Text, yes/no or a relationshipBar chart

If you get a chart you do not want, change the chart type.

Choose the table's columns

  1. Click the table widget, then press the Columns box.
  2. Tick the fields to show.
  3. Drag the column names under the box to reorder them, or use Move up and Move down.

If a widget shows no data

  • If it says Needs configuration, press Configure and fill in the box that the text under it names.
  • If it says "An error occurred." with Request failed with status code 403, the person viewing has no permission to read that table. Share the table with them.
  • If it says "No data", no record matches the filters or conditions you set.

If you change the data source

Every field you chose is cleared, including conditions and click-to-filter, because the new table has different fields. The widget's title and look stay.

If the data is large

A table reads only the first 200 records. A chart shows at most 500 groups. A scatter chart shows at most 2,000 points. You cannot change these numbers.
